On Tuesday, September 13, extremist Republicans in Congress led by Senator Lindsey Graham introduced legislation for a national abortion ban. 

This backward legislation seeks to outlaw abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Make no mistake, the GOP has been working towards this moment for years. They’ve packed the courts from the most local level to the Supreme Court to achieve their goal of controlling even our most personal decisions. Republicans said the result of the recent Supreme Court decision was to send the decision on abortion back to the states, but let’s be clear: The plan has always been to roll back our rights at the federal level.

This legislation comes just months after the Conservative-led Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the federal right to abortion. Republicans have schemed to control our bodies for decades and won’t stop until they enact a total ban on abortion nationwide.

Our action is clear: We need every member of Congress to fight against this extreme bill by pushing forward legislation that will codify the right to abortion into law at the national level. 

We’ve already seen the health care, economic, and constitutional crisis the Supreme Court’s decision has thrown millions of Americans into. A national ban is an even further attack on every American of reproductive age. 

Abortion justice can’t wait — Congress must act now to protect the health and rights of millions of Americans.
