On the campaign trail, Joe Biden promised to improve access to a quality education and lessen the financial burden of the student loan crisis that impacts nearly 45 million people in the United States — who hold a total of $1.7 trillion in debt.
And now, thanks to pressure from activists and organizers such as yourself, President Biden has extended the student loan payment pause until August 31, 2022. But we can’t stop here.
Excessive debt from seeking higher education impacts millions of recent graduates, older millennials, and middle-aged people. This debt takes away from our ability to pay for food, housing, health care, and to start saving for our future. Furthermore, the student debt crisis is a racial and gender issue, as this debt disproportionately is held by Black and brown Americans as well as women.
Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren have already called on President Biden to eliminate $50,000 in student debt. Though NextGen America will work tirelessly to eliminate all federal student loan debt in the United States, we believe this would be a great start.
