Abortion Access – Status (on the ballot as Prop 139): Arizona for Abortion Access, a coalition of pro-choice groups including the ACLU of Arizona, Healthcare Rising Arizona, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona, and more, gathered signatures to put a constitutional amendment affirming the right to abortion on the November 2024 ballot. The amendment would allow for abortion care up until the point of fetal viability, at about 23 weeks. Abortion is currently banned at 15 weeks. In early April, Arizona for Abortion Access coalition members announced they had gathered more than 506,000 petition signatures — far surpassing the state’s required 383,923 minimum. In an amazing show of support, the campaign submitted over 850K signatures on July 5th, a record for Arizona ballot initiatives. NextGen America will be supporting this ballot initiative.
Democracy Reform – Status (on the ballot): The Arizona legislature referred a constitutional amendment to the November 5, 2024 ballot that would require signatures from 10% of qualified electors from every legislative district in order to qualify a state statute initiative for the ballot. For constitutional amendments, that requirement would be 15%. NextGen America will be opposing this ballot initiative in 2024.
“Secure the Border Act” – Status (on the ballot as Prop 314): This anti-immigrant measure would allow law enforcement officers to racially profile individuals and families of color anywhere in the state – including against small children and elderly people – and at sensitive locations like schools, hospitals, or places of worship. It also violates the basic human rights of people seeking asylum and other immigrants. It is an unfunded mandate projected to cost Arizona taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually in court and incarceration costs alone.
