Major Environmental Groups Support State Legislative Candidates That Pledge Climate Action and Refuse Dirty Energy Money

Richmond, VA – Today, NextGen America and the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Victory Fund announced that 14 candidates in Virginia’s pivotal state legislative elections will be featured on GiveGreen.com. In partnership with the Virginia League of Conservation Voters PAC, GiveGreen will spotlight four State Senate candidates and ten State House candidates who have pledged action on climate and refused money from Dominion Energy.

“Virginia voters care deeply about combating climate change, and they deserve leadership that will fight right alongside them,” said Jill Lombardi, NextGen America GiveGreen Director. “With the state legislature up for grabs, we are supporting the candidates who have proven that they’ll advocate for and safeguard our environment. We’re excited to power them to victory this November.”

“Climate action is a key issue on the Virginia ballot this fall. With these candidates in office, we will have a true climate action majority at the statehouse, which means we can take the bold action we need in Virginia to cut carbon pollution, protect our coast, and safeguard public health, and grow a clean energy economy that works for all Virginians,” said Michael Town, Executive Director of the Virginia League of Conservation Voters PAC. “We look forward to electing these climate champions and finally breaking the logjam at the General Assembly that has stood in the way of progress for far too long.”

Each candidate on the GiveGreen site has taken a principled stance against accepting campaign contributions from all Virginia utility monopolies, including Dominion Energy, Appalachian Power, and their registered lobbyists. For years, these utility companies have had an outsized influence in Virginia elections, and these candidates are standing against them to ensure a cleaner future for all Virginians.

Already, nearly $1.5 million in direct candidate contributions have been raised and contributed via GiveGreen (www.givegreen.com) during the 2019-2020 election cycle. Last year, the program raised an incredible $23 million for 242 House and Senate candidates and 110 nonfederal candidates across 41 states, with 74% of these candidates winning election. In every cycle, GiveGreen supports the leaders that advocate for their communities and fight any and all attacks on public health, climate, and public lands protections.
