NextGen America Activates LGBTQIA+ Youth During Pride Month

Throughout the month of June, NextGen will educate and mobilize young people on LGBTQIA+ issues and the power of their vote

Austin, TX —  June is Pride month, a time to honor LGBTQIA+ accomplishments and commemorate the ongoing pursuit of equity for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. To celebrate, NextGen America, the country’s largest youth voting rights organization, is organizing all month long and activating millions of queer voters across the nation.

Advocacy

Throughout June, NextGen will host an educational deep-dive session on the history of Pride, encourage voters to write their Senators and request they pass the Equality Act, coordinate a virtual picnic, and lead a dating app organizing event showing folks how to use the apps to advocate, educate, and mobilize around LGBTQIA+ rights. Over 100 influencers will promote NextGen’s advocacy work online. Efforts to engage young voters in the community is especially salient as one in five Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQIA+.

“The courage, resilience, and advocacy of the LGBTQIA+ community has historically advanced justice and strengthened our democracy throughout history. This Pride month we recommit to uplifting queer voices and building a more equitable country,” NextGen America President Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez said. “With the recent Supreme Court draft leak showing a plan to overturn Roe, along with the nationwide flood of ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bills, guarding civil liberties like gay marriage and the right to gender-affirming care from GOP rollback is more essential than ever.

“NextGen is connecting with young people on the ground, in their communities, over the phone, at parades, and through dating apps to get out the vote and galvanize young people to take action on the issues that matter most to them,” Tzintzún Ramirez said.

Additional Pride month work includes posts on Instagram and TikTok highlighting current anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation, content from queer creators, and LGBTQIA+ history and culture.

Organizing

On the ground, NextGen staff will hold voter registration booths at Pride events in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Arizona, and Texas. This includes the largest LGBTQIA+ event in Philadelphia, SWEAT Pride, where NextGen will be an official sponsor, as well as the San Antonio Pride Festival, and the Raleigh Pride Parade. At the events, NextGen organizers will register voters, hand out branded merchandise, and educate attendees on the democratic process. Multiple social media influencers will also attend NextGen’s in-state events.
