Nation’s largest youth vote org joins Rep. Ocasio-Cortez in holding corrupt Justices accountable
Washington, D.C. — Today, NextGen America, alongside additional partner organizations, endorsed Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in introducing articles of impeachment in the US House of Representatives against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. The articles of impeachment state that both Thomas and Alito must be removed from their positions on the Supreme Court for “high Crimes and Misdemeanors” under Article II of the Constitution. The articles call out the billionaire-bought Justices enmeshed in webs of corruption for abusing their powers to protect and advance their own personal interests instead of the interests of the American people. Their actions are a direct assault on the principles of justice and equality that underpin our democracy.
NextGen America and partner organizations joined Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in calling for these Justices to be held accountable. Recent reporting shows that both justices have accepted undisclosed gifts and huge financial benefits from billionaire right-wing benefactors. Both Justices have also refused to recuse themselves in cases where they have conflicts of interest, and have shown allegiances to the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
“Young voters are outraged and stand firmly with Representative Ocasio-Cortez in her call to impeach Justice Thomas and Justice Alito,” NextGen America President Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez said. “Young people are fed up with these autocrats masquerading as impartial justices. We will inherit the long-term consequences of a rogue and corrupt Court, and that’s why we’re committed to fighting back and holding these Justices accountable. For the sake of our democracy, it is imperative that this corruption be addressed and we demand our members of Congress to do their job.”
Congress possesses the authority and duty under the U.S. Constitution to impeach Justices for “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors,” including corruption and abuse of power, and it is clear that Justices Alito and Thomas have undeniably met these criteria. Young voters demand action and stand with our members of Congress in holding these Justices accountable.
