NextGen America Statement on Passage of North Carolina Bill SB 20

In response to the North Carolina Republicans passing SB 20, NextGen America President Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez released the following statement:

“The passage of SB 20 marks a dangerous moment in North Carolina’s history. This monstrous bill – which will ban medication abortions at 10 weeks, ban surgical abortions at 12 weeks, and close abortion clinics entirely by imposing unworkable standards on clinics – is a clear attack on science, public health, and young North Carolinians.

“Republicans subverted democracy and pushed this legislation behind closed doors to override the will of the people, continuing their efforts to force their extreme right-wing agenda and roll back our rights. Abortion is essential, life-saving health care that should not be politicized or criminalized. By banning abortion, the government is forcing people into situations with serious consequences for their lives and their futures.

“NextGen America, along with our partners across the state, is determined to hold the line and defend our rights. Young people are outraged about the unrelenting attacks on their most basic liberties, and we are taking note ahead of 2024 of who stands against our movement for justice and equity and who stands with us in our fight for a better, more representative future.”
