NextGen America Targets Dana Rohrabacher and Mimi Walters Over Offshore Drilling

Releases ad in Orange County Register and rallies with local activists

Huntington Beach, CA — Today, at a protest in Huntington Beach, NextGen America called out Republicans Dana Rohrabacher (CA-48) and Mimi Walters (CA-45) for supporting the Trump Administration’s disastrous call for new oil drilling projects off the California coast. NextGen joined with local activists to rally outside Rep. Rohrabacher’s office in Huntington Beach and took out a half-page ad in the Orange County Register urging Californians to stop Rohrabacher and Walters from threatening California’s coastline.

“California’s coastal communities have been devastated by offshore drilling disasters time and time again,” said NextGen America President Tom Steyer. “Reckless policies that promote the profits of oil companies over the safety and livelihoods of California communities must be rejected, not embraced, by our elected representatives. If Mimi Walters and Dana Rohrabacher won’t do the right thing and protect their constituents, then their constituents have no recourse except to elect new representatives who will.”

NextGen organizer Morgan Mitchell speaks at the rally on Thursday afternoon in Huntington Beach, CA.

Yesterday, NextGen Rising ramped up its commitment to ousting Republicans like Walters and Rohrabacher in California, announcing a  3.5 million dollar initial investment in the engaging, registering, and turning out young voters in California. The effort will span at least 30 campuses, including 12 community colleges across the state, and hire over 80 youth organizers to engage and mobilize young people to elect progressives up and down the ballot throughout California, with a focus on unseating Republicans in districts 10, 21, 25, 39, 45, 48, and 49.

“We will not allow Republicans like Mimi Walters and Dana Rohrabacher to sell our coasts to the highest bidder. The coasts of California are not just a unique and beautiful ecosystem, they are an indispensable resource for the thousands of Californians who rely on them to earn a living. If you ransom our coast’s future for campaign contributions from Big Oil, we promise that your political future will come to an end this November,” said NextGen California Youth Organizing Director Raul Preciado.
