DETROIT, MI — NextGen Michigan endorsed Rep. Rashida Tlaib for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District today, following a standout first term in which Tlaib established herself as a champion for young voters in Michigan on critical issues like climate change, the economy, and racial justice.
“Amidst an unprecedented series of economic and health concerns for young Michiganders, the unacceptable killings of young Black people by police throughout the country, and the ongoing fallout from the Flint water crisis, Rashida Tlaib is the clear choice for young voters this August,” said Jay Williamson, NextGen Michigan State Director. “Rep. Tlaib has spent her first term walking the walk — she has been responsive to her community, an effective advocate in Washington, and never loses sight of the fact that young people will be left holding the bag when it comes to cleaning up the damage on climate change, rampant police brutality, and the coronavirus pandemic. We can’t think of a better way to fight for the future of Michigan than sending her back to Washington this November.
During her first term, Congresswoman Tlaib proved a staunch advocate on issues that matter most to young Michiganders, like the Green New Deal and increasing the minimum wage. Additionally, Rep. Tlaib introduced two bills to prohibit auto insurance discrimination against people living in Detroit and bring down costs. As a champion for progressive issues and economic justice, Rep. Tlaib has rightfully and effectively demanded that our government be for the people, not for corporations.
“I founded NextGen America because young people are the progressive electoral disruptors who compel our country to solve our most urgent issues: the overlapping crises of climate and racism,” said Tom Steyer, NextGen America Founder. “Now more than ever, we need to empower young people across the country to turn out and elect leaders up and down the ballot who are champions of those progressive values. Rep. Rashida Tlaib is a candidate who will inspire a diverse coalition of voters in Michigan and who will fight for and alongside young people and voters of color to pass bold climate action, like a Green New Deal, that prioritizes environmental justice and redresses our systems to build a more equitable future.”
As NextGen fights to turn Michigan blue, staff will be actively identifying and turning out voters for the August primary by texting and calling young Michiganders and hosting days of action to ensure young people are registered and ready to turn out for Tlaib on August 4. Mobilizing young people in District 13 in the primary allows NextGen to build momentum for November in this critical swing state.
