STATEMENT FROM NEXTGEN CLIMATE PRESIDENT TOM STEYER ON THE COP21 CLIMATE CHANGE AGREEMENT

This morning, negotiators at COP21 released the final text of the Paris Agreement, which is expected to be adopted by the parties later today. In response, NextGen Climate President Tom Steyer released the following statement:

The agreement announced this morning in Paris is the signal to the world that we have moved decisively away from a fossil fuel driven economy, forever. The announcement comes from nearly 200 national governments, but it reflects the thoughts and hopes of a much broader coalition of states, cities, businesses and active citizens.

President Obama deserves a tremendous amount of credit for working with officials from around the world to forge an agreement that combats the worst impacts of climate change and embraces clean energy solutions. We must seize this moment and push our leaders—and every presidential candidate—to recognize our responsibility to future generations and accelerate the transition to clean energy. It’s clear that those stopping progress are not only at odds with the majority of Americans, but also with the rest of the world.
