Statement From Tom Steyer on the One-Year Anniversary of the Clean Power Plan

“One year ago, President Obama finalized the Clean Power Plan—a crucial step forward to addressing climate change and transitioning our country to 100 percent clean energy. President Obama’s leadership has helped America build a clean energy economy and lead the world to the historic Paris Agreement. His incredible efforts on this front deserve our deepest thanks.

“But while President Obama’s leadership on the Clean Power Plan has put our country on the right path, the outcome of the 2016 election could threaten our progress. Although Americans overwhelmingly support transitioning to clean energy, Donald Trump and Republicans across the country have vowed to end the Clean Power Plan. Trump and the GOP are prioritizing profits for corporate polluters over protecting American families.

“After the hottest June in modern history it’s clear that we need bold action to tackle the climate crisis. That’s why we need to elect climate champions up and down the ballot—to build upon the success of the Clean Power Plan and ensure that America becomes ‘the clean energy superpower of the 21st century.'”
