Tom Steyer Joins Community Leaders to Rally to Protect the Clean Power Plan

Bay Area organizations and hundreds of citizens denounce Administrator Pruitt’s reckless agenda

San Francisco, CA — Today, NextGen America President Tom Steyer joined environmental justice, healthcare, faith, business, and government leaders to rally to protect the Clean Power Plan outside San Francisco City Hall. Hundreds of citizens joined Steyer, local organizations, and community leaders to show their support for protecting clean air and water, and holding polluters accountable for their actions.

“Time and again, we’ve seen the Trump Administration abandon its responsibility to protect the health and safety of the American people in favor of powerful energy interests,” said NextGen America President Tom Steyer. “At hearings in West Virginia and Missouri, Americans made it clear that repealing the Clean Power Plan would jeopardize our clean air and water — and the message in San Francisco was no different. The American people are making their voices heard, and we won’t let the Trump Administration and Administrator Pruitt put people ahead of profits for corporate polluters.”

The rally took place outside the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) public hearing on the proposed repeal of the Clean Power Plan. While the EPA held public commentary sessions across the country, Administrator Pruitt and President Trump have already made it clear that they intend to dismantle the Clean Power Plan and promote looser regulations that favor big polluters. Ahead of the April 25th deadline, NextGen America is part of a coalition of progressive organizations that has encouraged over 400,000 supporters to submit comments to the EPA demanding protection of the Clean Power Plan.

The Trump Administration is widely expected to repeal the Clean Power Plan, despite overwhelming opposition voiced at hearings across the country. Ending the Clean Power Plan could lead to more asthma attacks, higher energy bills, and more pollutants in the air we breathe. Concrete steps to combat climate change are a boon to economic growth and our health — and NextGen America will continue to organize and empower the American people to make their voices heard.
