In response to eight Senate Democrats capitulating to Republicans to reopen the government, NextGen America Interim President Victoria Yang released the following statement:
“Senate Democrats’ capitulation to Trump and Republicans exemplifies why young people do not trust the party establishment, especially when affordability and healthcare are young peoples’ top concerns. Instead of fighting to protect healthcare and stopping Republicans’ scheme to create tax breaks for billionaires, eight Democrats, under the leadership of Senator Schumer, have caved and abandoned their own base in the process.
“Young people want leaders who actually fight for us, not betray us in favor of corporate interests. Last Tuesday, young people showed up for Democrats down-ballot, and now, eight Senate Democrats have betrayed that trust. This decision for many people across the country will mean skyrocketing costs on health insurance, and in some instances, the difference between life or death.
“Republicans control the White House, Senate, and House – and this atrocious bill is their creation. However, young people don’t want leaders who fold in the face of a fight. Young people’s support cannot be taken for granted, it needs to be earned every day. Democrats have a choice to make, but for young people the choice is clear – they want leaders who will fight the affordability crisis, rising healthcare costs, and stand up to billionaires. This isn’t too much to ask for, and it’s why we will continue to organize, mobilize, and turn out young people to elect leaders who will represent them on the most important issues.”
