In response to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signing Senate Bill 4 into law, NextGen America President Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez released the following statement:
“SB4 is a deeply racist and discriminatory law, casting a shadow on the values Texas should uphold. One in six Texans are immigrants, yet time and again, extreme GOP policies in Texas have created a hostile environment, employing inhumane and unconstitutional measures that not only discourage migration but also violate the fundamental rights of migrants and asylum seekers.
“This law opens the door for state law enforcement to engage in racial profiling and will harm millions of Texans by preventing them from engaging in their lives without fear of criminal retribution. Everyone, regardless of background, deserves the opportunity to breathe free in the land of opportunity, and we will continue to advocate for justice and compassion in our great state.
“What Gov. Abbot doesn’t realize is that his hateful policies will mobilize young voters who are determined to fight back against the GOP’s racist agenda. We must turn out in unprecedented numbers in 2024 to fight for our values.”
