Young Voters Head to the Polls in Virginia with Issues Top of Mind

NextGen America helped educate and mobilize thousands of young voters across Virginia heading into Election Day

Washington, DC — Today, thousands of young voters across Virginia will head to the polls to cast their ballots. Leading up to today’s election, NextGen America helped educate, engage, and mobilize young voters ages 18-29 to learn more about the issues most important to them and how to show up and vote.
Across the state, NextGen organized on 10 college campuses, made over 680,000 texts and calls, conducted thousands of face-to-face conversations and knocked on thousands of doors to harness the power of young voters to make their voice heard. Overall, NextGen America mobilized young voters in Virginia to take over 740,000 actions before election day. NextGen America’s organizers and volunteers are continuing to call, text, and mobilize voters throughout Election Day.

“When young people are educated, organized, and empowered, their participation in the democratic process has an undeniable impact at every level of government,” NextGen America Interim President Victoria Yang said. “While the Trump Administration attacks young people’s freedoms, they are determined to show up and protect their rights at the state and local level. From affordability to healthcare, young people care deeply about the top issues in their community. As young people head to the polls today, we are proud of our work to mobilize this powerful bloc and know they will show up and vote.”

“Young people across the state are excited to show up and make their voices heard today,” NextGen America’s Virginia State Director Will Winters said. “Whether it’s addressing affordability, protecting freedom of speech, or addressing climate change, young people want leaders who represent them on the issues they care about most. From Norfolk State to Virginia Tech, we’ve had thousands of conversations with young voters on campus and I know they are ready to make their voices heard and make a difference in their communities.”

NextGen’s data-backed outreach approach centered issue education and included a partnership with Ballot Builder, a nonpartisan voter guide resource, to educate young voters on candidates’ policy positions via a ballot tool. The resource allowed students to learn more about candidates’ policy positions on key issues like the economy, the environment, and healthcare, among other topics.
As final numbers continue to roll in, it is clear that NextGen played a significant role in mobilizing young people to make their voices heard in this year’s elections.
