Young Voters Respond to Michigan Repealing Abortion Ban

In response to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signing the repeal of the state’s 1931 abortion ban into law, NextGen America President Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez released the following statement:

“We are so proud to see Michigan officially repeal the dangerous and antiquated abortion law that puts the lives of thousands of people who can give birth across the state at risk. As we celebrate this huge progressive win, one thing is clear: young voters made this possible.

“Young Michiganders turned out at historic levels last cycle, propelling progressives to victory – and today, we see the tangible policy victories that we can accomplish when young voters use their collective power at the ballot box. Over 62 percent of 18-29-year-olds voted for Governor Whitmer during the midterm election, leading to a Democratic trifecta with majorities in both the state House and Senate chambers for the first time in forty years.

“Today’s action, as well as the other coming bills that will protect LGBTQ+ rights, expand background checks for gun purchases, and protect labor unions, serve as a blueprint for what is possible when you have progressives in full control. This is evidence of what young voters can accomplish when we come together and use our powerful voices for change.”
