Young Voters Respond to SCOTUS Student Debt Ruling

In response to the Supreme Court ruling striking down President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, NextGen America President Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez released the following statement:

“Today, the conservative leaning Supreme Court and extremist Republicans denied millions of Americans nationwide student debt relief. Young voters know that this was a politically motivated challenge to prevent the Biden-Harris administration from delivering on behalf of the American people. Student debt is a real crisis and young voters will not sit idly by while extremists play politics as the majority of college students have to forego their dreams of buying a house or starting a family or business because they are drowning in debt.

“President’s Biden plan was a historic action that would have provided life-changing relief to young people. Instead, Republican and partisan forces worked to obstruct this relief – and we know that young voters will remember this come 2024. The president had our back, believing in a future where young people can thrive, and extremist challengers ultimately held us back from this future. Now, before payments are set to restart at the end of the summer, we urge our leaders to find a permanent solution to create affordable higher education for all.

“Republicans and this Supreme Court are out of touch with the needs of tens of millions of Americans. The message the Court sent today is that they would prefer to take away life changing relief to 40 million Americans and stand in the way of progress than address the needs and pain of an entire generation of American young people. NextGen America has been fighting for progress on student debt relief and affordable education, and heading into 2024, we will not forget the people who fight for us everyday and the people who would rather protect the pockets of shady billionaires.”
